LABOUR OF LOVE

My work is essentially about journeys. It’s also about memories. These are literal or figurative journeys. In the series Labour of Love, the handprinted suitcases are the only colour. They are gold because wherever we go we take our most precious possessions, thoughts and memories with us. In this case I wanted to take only the golden moments, indicating that one can leave one’s old baggage behind and move forward. My work has a faded quality because, like the memory it is a resonance, a forgotten fragrance of something remembered.

In this instance, I worked on hand made paper that was produced at Phumani Paper Archives. I then worked with Thandi, a master printer at Artist Proof Studio where we used the litho print method. The edition is a varied, limited print as each one is on hand made paper and each suitcase is hand painted.
