South African painter and printmaker Sue Martin employs dusty vistas, scorched by the African sun, as backdrops against which she grapples with her positionality as a third-generation South African. Drawing from historical sources, lived experiences, travels, and her own photographs, Martin creates a palimpsest of ideas, images, media, and marks. Her textures prompt viewers to look closer and scratch beneath the visually pleasing surface to unearth layers of complex engagement.
